Mozart Requiem - 50th Anniversary of the Schola Cantorum - Saturday 9 March

In celebration of the Schola Cantorum’s 50th anniversary, we are delighted that Old Amplefordians will join the Schola and the Ampleforth & Ryedale Community Choir to sing Mozart’s Requiem in the magnificent Abbey Church on Saturday 9 March.

The Schola Cantorum was established in 1970 at the request of Basil Hume. The aim was to help preserve the singing of music written for the Roman Catholic Church, along with the best examples from other traditions, in the context for which it was written, the celebration of Mass. This remains at the heart of the Schola’s mission.

Director of Music, Edward Seymour, said: “Music is the lifeblood of the College. It flows through College life so that all students encounter it whether through playing an instrument, singing at Mass, or attending concerts. After 50 years, the Schola has remained steadfast in its service to the College, Abbey, and local community and in so doing remains one of the greatest assets and draws to the College. Music will always be the jewel in the Ampleforth crown. May it go from strength to strength.”
