GCSE Success 2023

Many congratulations go to all our students receiving their GCSE results today. More than 60% of students were awarded the highest 9-6 grades this year.

Many congratulations go to all our students receiving their GCSE results today.  It has been a pleasing year with strong results consistent with 2019 levels as grading across the UK returns to pre-pandemic levels. We are delighted to see 30% of our cohort getting 7 or more grades 7 to 9 (A/A* in old GCSE terms).

More than 60% of students were awarded the highest 9-6 grades this year. Our scientists continue to go from strength to strength with two in every three grades in Biology, Chemistry and Physics awarded 7, 8 or 9 – Chemistry comes in at an exceptional 82% at 7 to 9.  Other areas of success were Drama and Music with 80% of students receiving 9 to 7 grades respectively, showing the strength of creative arts at the College. Languages also saw success with almost 75% of our Spanish grades at 9 to 7 and 50% in German.

Peter Roberts, Head, says: “Ampleforth’s Year 11s have successfully navigated the challenge of live GCSE exams and are set to flourish in the Sixth Form, fortified by the talented group of new pupils joining the College this September. This year group has always impressed me by their responsiveness and willingness to support each other and take challenges head on - an approach which will serve them well. There are some excellent results, reflecting the value added by the teaching at Ampleforth as well as the pupils’ hard work. This group of young people are determined to make the most of the wider nature of the whole Ampleforth experience, which aims to educate the whole person, including the important focus on their academic futures. I am confident that they will thrive in the more open-ended Sixth Form curriculum and wish them every success.”
