Junior (Years 7 & 8)
The aim of learning in our Junior years is to embed, enrich and enthuse:
- embed expectations and provide a platform on which to achieve excellence at GCSE and beyond
- enthuse pupils with a love of learning, trying out new subjects and exploring topics in depth
- enrich their learning with a wide range of experiences both in and out of the classroom
As our Junior pupils' studies are not focused on Common Entrance, learning is not constrained by an exam-led syllabus. There is time to explore subjects more deeply and feed curious minds. Each pupil is challenged to meet their learning potential.
We value numeracy, literacy, and oracy skills, and develop these in all areas of school life. Our carefully considered curriculum both prepares pupils for the next stage of learning, laying strong foundations for GCSE, and stands alone as a coherent body of knowledge, skills, and aptitudes. It is broad and academically challenging and is encompassed by the Ampleforth College Junior Certificate which recognises pupils' progress over the two years. At the end of Year 8, students are awarded a Bronze, Silver, or Gold Certificate.
We prepare our pupils to start Year 9 equipped with essential skills, able to organise themselves and take responsibility for their own learning. Pupils are taught by specialist subject teachers in Mathematics, English, Design & Technology, Languages, Art, Drama, Music, Physical Education (PE), Computing, History, Geography, Christian Theology (Religious Studies), Classics, the Sciences and Christian Living (personal, social, health and economic education).
Our Christian Living programme includes citizenship, wellbeing, and British values, promoting the ideas of respect, service, wanting what is best for each other, and taking responsibility for the world around us.
Academic enrichment is fostered through opportunities to take part in both internal and external competitions, visits, talks and additional activities. We make the most of our beautiful environment to continue learning outside the classroom as often as possible and enjoy the wonders of nature. With the support and encouragement of teachers, pupils begin to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving, to confidently articulate their thoughts and ideas, and develop resilience. Our pupils are inspired to have a lifelong love of learning.
